Built in the 17th century, Place des Vosges is the oldest square in Paris. It was constructed under Henry IV between 1605 and 1612 after Henry II was accidentally wounded in the eye by the lance of his captain of guards, during a tournament. It was originally the Place Royale and though the housefronts were designated the Pavilion of the King and of the Queen, no royal has ever lived in the aristocratic square, except for Anne of Austria in the Pavilion de la Reine, for a short while. Place Royale initiated subsequent developments of Paris that created a suitable urban background for the French aristocracy and nobility. The square was often the place for the nobility to chat, and served as a meeting place for them and to this day boasts of high-end shops, art galleries, cafes, and epitomizes the classic French style which remains a unique example of seventeenth century architecture.
Place des Vosges is structured around two pavilions, that of the Queen at the north part of the square, and that of the King at the south part. They are not open to the public ; however, you can still visit the house of Victor Hugo, author of 'Les Misérables', which is now a municipal museum. It is free and open daily from 9am to 6pm every day except Monday.
Not far from Place des Vosges, there is the Jewish quarter, Rue de Rivoli, Republique and Bastille - all within walking distance. You can even walk to the Seine river and Ile Saint-Louis or to the Canal Saint-Martin. There is even a large open-air market called Marche Bastille that is every Thursday and Sunday from 7AM to 130PM.
