Italian Desserts that Rome Does Best

Rome isn't exactly the first place you'll think of when it comes to desserts, is it? You'll probably think of Paris, London, or even New York first before the Italian capital. And while the 'Eternal City' is revered to be a food capital of sorts, its sweets aren't exactly the stars of the show. Or at least, that's what you think! Unbeknownst to many, Rome actually makes some of the sumptuous Italian desserts out of all the cities in the Mediterranean country. The places here just have a certain way of preparing them, and if you want to know what they are, you can actually make them at home too!

Tartufo al Cioccolato

The Tartufo al Cioccolato is probably one of the richest desserts out there when it comes to chocolatey treats. You literally have to make use of pure cocoa powder to achieve the authentic Italian taste. And with the ice cream base, it makes for a salivating dessert after a hefty meal of Italian pasta, pizza, or what-have-you! In Rome, however, you'll probably taste some of the richest variations of the Tartufo al Cioccolato out there. Some make use of deep dark chocolate powder to really drive in the cocoa taste. While others go for the other extreme end: white chocolate.

Maritozzi

It's relatively rare for you to find a dish in Italian cuisine that's light and airy. This Mediterranean country thrives on producing and serving some extremely flavourful options. However, there's still one dessert, which is actually a breakfast mainstay, that you can say is light and airy. It's the Maritozzi. Essentially a soft bun filled—overflowingly, in fact—with whipped cream. If the softly baked bread isn't light enough, the delicate cream filling will have you feeling as if you just bit into a sumptuous cloud. In Rome, however, they often insert some fresh fruit slices and candy bits to add some flavour into the mix.

Profiteroles

Though the Maritozzi seems like a cream puff, the Profiteroles better its that title. And what a cream puff it is! Make no mistake, this puff pastry treat is as Italian as they come. It's actually in Italy where it first originated; France just took it in during the 16th century. And anyways, the profiteroles are an entirely different dessert too, especially in Rome. Here, they serve that's drizzled in chocolate ganache, not just ordinary chocolate sauce as in other Italian cities. With it, the dessert tastes a lot richer and gives you a much better sugar rush than you might expect!

Cannoli

Wait a minute not! Yes, the Cannoli is actually a Sicilian dish. So ow come Rome gets to say that theirs is the best? Well, for one thing, just because a particular food originated in your area, that doesn't mean you're the best at making it. Secondly, Rome has upgraded the cream-filled snack to more than just a typical sweet treat. With their own flavourful renditions, they've transformed the cannoli into a gourmet dessert. Think chocolate chip bits and drizzled with equally chocolatey sauce. Or caramel fillings that will surprise your taste buds upon your first bite.

Tiramisu

Finally, the Tiramisu is as Roman as they come when it comes to Italian desserts. You'll probably find a dime a dozen places that serve their own variations of the classic sweet dish, each more mouth-watering than the next. What makes Roman tiramisu different from other cities (and countries for that matter) is that they ensure that theirs remain rich in flavour and texture. The fanciest establishments in the Italian capital make sure of a different alternative to change the classic dessert up every once and a while. You might taste one made with amaretto cookies, for example. Or another that was enthused with marsala liquor. it's these subtle changes that make all the difference.
