Dutch Pastries You Can Bake at Home

What are the Dutch most known for? Wooden clogs? Probably! Windmills? Yes! Weed? Let's not go there! All in all, the Netherlands is a pleasant country that's simply beautiful and looks like a fun place to be in. It may not draw as many people as France or Spain, but it's still a must-visit for any traveller. Their culture is perhaps one of the more unique ones in Europe. With that said, the country does have its own charms that are completely underrated. One is their cuisine. Particularly their pastries. Some of their sweet treats are the best breakfast food you'll ever have. And here are some that are also easy to make at home.

Gemberlous

It's easy to mistake Gemberlous as cinnamon buns. They most likely are the Dutch's version of that sticky and oh-so-sweet pastry. However, the Gemberlous is far more distinct in taste and texture. For one thing, the pastry is often much softer than the more common cinnamon bun. This may be because it's mostly served drenched in a buttery sauce, not just drizzled with buttercream. It also has a certain kick to it, courtesy of the candied ginger in it. In fact, the dessert has often been referred to as the "ginger roll" rather than a cinnamon roll. Though it still has cinnamon in it too.

Moorkoppen

If France as the eclair, the Netherland has the Moorkoppen! Imagine biting into this after a hard day's work! Although it can also work well with breakfast and tea time, the Moorkoppen is arguably the best after dinner. It's the perfect rich and creamy dessert after a hearty meal. The light cream inside will taste so good in contrast to the often dark chocolate sauce on the outer pastry. But don't think that this is just another version of the eclair. An important distinction is that the Moorkoppen oftentimes comes with a fruit inside. You won't see that in any eclair!

Nonnevotten

For a pastry that means the "nun's bun," you'd never know that the Nonnevotten is so devilishly delicious! Imagine a bread pretzel that's baked just right, not too toasted, and sprinkled with sweet sugar. It's the kind of Sunday treat that's always waiting for you on grandma's table. The kind of sweet bread which pairs perfect with a cup of coffee or a warm cup of tea. Though it may seem like your ordinary pastry that just about anyone can bake, it's still a special treat that's light, sweet, and hits the spot just nicely.

Banket

Oh, did you read that as 'blanket?' That's understandable. Not only is the spelling near the word, but Banket also looks like a baked blanket hiding a sweet filling inside. And what a filling it is. Usually, it's a fruit jam, ranging from the juiciest of peaches to the sweetest of berries. It can also come chopped with nuts or sprinkled with cherries, some add textures to your baked delight. The Dutch often serve them during Christmas but you can make it anytime you want. And in fact, after you taste one or two, you'll want to eat it anytime you want as well!

Appelflap

Don't insult this delicious pastry by comparing it to the dessert pies from famous fast-food companies. The Appelflap is much better than those. This is a baked treat that deserves the highest of respect and will make your mouth water just by making it. Sure, there are similarities in appearance and probably texture with the fast-food pies, but this pastry is and should be made with love. A combination of apples, cinnamon, raisins, and sugar, it's perfect for a homemade treat that you just want to enjoy after a long hard day. The best pick-me-up, whether for breakfast, lunch, or dinner!
