What to Know About Public Transport in Sicily

Navigating public transport in Sicily isn't so simple. Remember that this is the biggest island in the Mediterranean, with cities and towns that are bigger than the next. Going from one place to another isn't exactly the easiest thing in the world. But it's not impossible either! As long as you're aware of the public transport systems in Sicily, such as the inter-city buses, rental vehicles, and ferries, you're good to go. Just choose the ones that you prefer, know the schedule beforehand, and rest assured that you'll reach your destination with little to no problem at all!

What to Know About Public Transport in Sicily

Is There A Metro in Sicily?

The many towns in Sicily don't exactly look like the modern-day metropolises with metro systems. There are taxis and buses, sure, but a light-rail system? Well, there are, in fact, a few places on the island that have it. Of course, one is Palermo, the bustling capital city of Sicily. Though it's more of a tram system, it's still as effective in helping commuters reach their destination in no time. In Catania, on the other hand, they have a standard metro system. It's as modern as any other subway even though most of the town is pretty old and historic.

Renting A Car

Perhaps the best way to get around Sicily is to rent a vehicle. Sure, the island may have commendable public transport, but they don't always guarantee that you can commute as effectively as you would in the bigger cities in Italy. Especially if you plan on going to the more remote towns on the island. You're better off renting a vehicle on your own to really make sure you'd get anywhere with little to no problem at all. Don't worry! There are plenty of rentals in Sicily. There are also many ferries that let you bring your car along when you travel to the island.

Sicily's Road Rules

If you do decide to rent a vehicle in Sicily, you'd do well to know the road rules here too. The first rule is that they drive on the right side of the road here. You need to stay in your lane as much as possible since Sicilian drivers are notorious for their speed. And speaking speed, the average limit here is 50km/h (approximately 30mph). Don't go over or under unless you want to get in trouble with the law. Moreover, you're required to wear a helmet if you're riding a two-wheeled vehicle. This is to ensure your safety more than anything else.

Taking The Bus

The most common way to get around Sicily is to take the bus. There are countless lines that operate throughout the island. There are those that stay within their respective towns and others that take passengers from one city to the next. Whether you're going from Syracuse to Palermo, Palermo to Trapani, or Catania to Agrigento, a bus will take you there with no problem at all. Do note, however, that these buses run on schedules adjacent to those of schools or churches. This means that if you want you'll only get to ride them from early in the morning until mid-afternoon.

Go On A Scenic Train Ride

Another good alternative is to ride a train. As mentioned previously, Sicily has its fair share of railway systems. The main line starts from east Palermo to Messina, then goes south to Syracuse from Catania. Take note that these are the bigger cities on the island. If you want to get to smaller and more remote towns, there are other lines on offer as well. But they don't guarantee that they'll stop in the actual towns. There's a good chance you'll still need to ride a bus or even walk when you get to the smaller cities. Fortunately, however, these trains operate both day and night.

Boarding A Ferry

Now, what if you want to travel to Sicily's offshore islands? There are the Aeolian Islands, Egadi Islands, and the Pelagic Islands, to name a few. How will you get there from the main island? In the same way that you get to Sicily from mainland Italy—take a ferry! Luckily, ferries that go to these islands operate all year round. No matter the season, they can take you to these smaller but equally beautiful paradises. Moreover, there are also some ferries that travel from coastal town to coastal town, providing another good alternative to getting around aside from the buses and trains.

Do Transportation Apps Work in Sicily?

In this day and age, a transportation app is a must when you travel. When the place's public transport faces a problem, it's up to these digital programs to find you a good alternative to reaching your destination. With that said, do transportation apps work in Sicily? The answer is yes, some of them do. And notably, they mostly operate in big towns like Palermo. You'll find that you can book a ride in any of these cities. But if you want to get to the smaller towns, you're better off relying on the standard public transport instead.
