'What is there to do in Koh Samui?' That is the age-old question that many often ask when they consider a trip to southern Thailand. Of course, you can expect that going to the beach is likely the number one priority of those who plan to go here, but is that it? Koh Samui's beaches are stunning, that's true, but the island also offers a lot more beyond its shorelines. You'd be surprised at how much you can fill your day doing all sorts of things in Koh Samui. From visiting magnificent deities to having a foodie trip, here's what you can do on this beautiful island.

What To Do in A Day in Koh Samui

Have A Foodie Trip in Bophut

Apart from the sand and the seas, what makes Koh Samui—and any other Thai destination for that matter—such a great place is the food. Thai cuisine is already regarded as one of the most delicious in the world, but wait until you get to taste what Koh Samui has to offer! Especially in its famous fishing village of Bophut. One of the most popular areas in Koh Samui, this place is known for its many foodie hotspots and, of course, seafood! You can spend an entire day indulging in both local food and foreign cuisine made with the freshly-caught produce that Bophut offers every day.

See The Big Buddha

Thailand is beloved for its many temples. There are famous ones in Bangkok, notable ones in Phuket, and here in Koh Samui, there are also those that you simply have to see for yourself. The most famous feature of most Thai temples is, of course, the Buddha. Golden and sometimes gigantic, they're local treasures that you won't find anywhere else. Here on this island, a definite must-see is the big golden Buddha at Wat Phra Yai. A shimmering 12-meter gold-plated Buddha greets visitors with its majestic sheen and stately appeal. Seeing it up close and personal will take your breath away!

Marvel at The Guanyin Goddess

What if you want to see someone other than Buddha? As majestic as the Big Buddha is, there are so many other states of the diety all throughout Thailand that, at a certain point, you'll begin to think of them as a dime a dozen. Sure, they're special in their own right, but you'll want something different at some point, right? Well, there's actually another diety worth visiting in Koh Samui. At Wat Plai Laem, you can also see the glorious Chinese goddess of mercy and compassion, Guanyin, and all her 18 arms in full view. Standing tall and proud, she oversees all voyages that come to and from Koh Samui.

Swim Under The Waterfalls

Swimming will likely be a huge part of your trip to Koh Samui. Most especially if you go here during summer when the weather is so hot that the only thing you can do is to immerse yourself in water. But apart from the many beaches in Koh Samui, another great and arguably cooler alternative is to swim under the island's waterfalls. Though you'll have to trek through a jungle to get to the famous Namuan waterfalls, the refreshing dip you'll get to enjoy here will be more than worth it. After spending most of the day under the waterfalls, you'll feel more rejuvenated than ever before!

Take a Selfie with The Hin Ta And Hin Yai Rocks

If you truly prefer to go to the beach, one of the best in Koh Samui is definitely Lamai beach. From the lively waves to the serene shoreline, this is the sort of seaside paradise that this Thai island is known for. But there's another fascinating sight to see here apart from the sands and the sea. It's actually on Lamai Beach where you can find Koh Samui's infamous Hin Ta And Hin Yai Rocks. These notable formations are notorious for unintentionally depicting both male and female genitalia, hence the fascination from many locals and tourists alike.

Go Kayaking

Up for some adventure beyond the beaches of Koh Samui? Then go kayaking! Since taking a boat or ferry is a common mode of public transportation here, you can easily find lots of kayak rentals and other similar services near the coasts of the island. And when you do, you'll want to take off and see the other nearby island and what natural wonders they have to offer too. From Ko Tao to the stunning Mu Koh Angthong National Marine Park, there's no end to the many stunning places you can explore on a kayak.

Spend Time Under The Sea

If you thought the only beautiful sights to see in Koh Samui are on land, think again! Below this beautiful island are various underwater ecosystems that truly exhibit Mother Nature's true beauty. And you'll only be able to see them if you go snorkeling or scuba diving. Don't worry, there are plenty of such businesses and services near Koh Samui's beaches. It won't be that difficult for you to sign up for one. And when you do, remember to always follow instructions to remain safe and sound. This is the only way to bask in Thailand's underwater glory with no worry at all!
