July 23, 2021

Sardinia is an island in Italy that you can't compare with any other place. In many ways, it's practically in a world of its own. That's how much you'll be inhibited by the island and the extent to how much you'll be invested in your stay here. From the outside, it seems like your ordinary island with very little to offer. It's easy to think that what you'll see here are what you've already seen in mainland Italy. However, even if you're just going here for a day. you'll be surprised at how much you can do.

What To Do in Sardinia For A Day

Enjoy The Island's Beaches

Perhaps the most expected thing to do in Sardinia is to go to the beach. They are what the island is known for, after all. On this little Italian island, a myriad of white sandy shorelines can rival even the most beautiful paradises in the Caribbean and the Pacific. Boasting clear jewel-tone waters, shallow shores, and many untouched lands, you relax, take a load off, and unwind in Sardinia. Don't forget the fascinating coves and rock formations too! They make even the most serene landscapes look more breathtaking. Whether it'd be with friends, family, or simply your significant other, you'll definitely enjoy your time on the many beaches of the island.

Go Sailing

Since you're already by the sea, why not go sailing as well? Although Sardinia is just one beautiful island, it's actually near a ton of other similarly incredible isles. Off the northeast coasts, there's the La Maddalena archipelago, boasting similarly divine shorelines, each more remote than the next. Asinara Island, on the northwestern side of Sardinia, on the other hand, has. fascinating history to it. Up until 1997, it housed a prison colony, which was then closed to make way for a national park. How's that for a backstory? Also, if you don't want to sail off to another island, you can simply float around Sardinia and relax in your boat, just like how they do it in Saint Tropez.

Visit The Cities & Villages

The great thing about visiting the quaint villages and beautiful cities of Sardinia is that you actually start from there. Well, in the big cities, at least. The most common ports of entry in Sardinia are the big airports in the cities of Cagliari, Alghero, and Olbia. Incidentally, they're also some of the most beautiful parts of the island. The capital city, Cagliari, for instance, has preserved its Medieval origins with its distinct walled structure. On the other hand, is home to a number of colorful villages that are definitely Instagram-worthy! While the seaside towns of Alghero have a serene charm to them unlike any other!

See The Archaeological Sites

Though it's not exactly Athens, Sardinia boasts archeological sites. For instance, there's the stone ancient megalithic edifice, Nurgahe, found all over Sardinia, These unique structures are said to originate from the Phoenician era and were busy and lively towns at the time. There's also the island's collection of old mines, particularly in the southern region of Sulcis. Though it's borderline impossible to find any treasure there anymore, walking through any of them would be quite the adventure. And finally, there's the Tuvixeddu necropolis located near the city of Cagliari. Another Phoenician site, it's the largest of its kind in the Mediterranean.

Marvel At The Castles

Other sites that peek into the history and heritage of Sardinia are the castles. Many of them, both the preserved and the ruins, harken back to the island's Medieval history, one that's likely full of exciting events. One of the most famous is the Castello di San Michele, located on a hill near Cagliari. Looking like a set straight out of 'Game of Thrones,' it's the type of well-preserved heritage site that history buffs (and likey 'GOT' fans too!) will go gaga over. Another is the lone tower on La Pelosa beach, situated on a tiny island that you can actually swim to. How's that for an adventure?

Eat The Best Local Food

Since Sardinia is part of Italy, you can bet that it offers a ton of delicious food too! The local dishes and delicacies here are out of this world, further proving that Italian food still reigns supreme in the culinary world! For one thing, you can get delicious lobster and serve it in various ways, be it in mouth-watering pasta or atop cheesy pizzas. If you're up for some meat instead, look no further than a roasted sucking pig, porcetto arrosto! It's every bit as heavy and hearty as it seems. As for dessert, some sweet seadas pastries will work just fine!

Have Fun At The Festival

To really get to know the culture and way of life in Sardinia, you ought to take part in a local festival here. Apart from Italy's national holidays, the island has its own unique celebrations that you won't find anywhere else. The feast of Sant’Efisio, the island's patron saint, for instance, has most of the cities of Sardinia celebrating in one big festival. They don colorful traditional attire and masks while riding horses and make their way from Cagliari to Pula. It's a grand procession you won't want to miss if you're here!
