What's So Lovely About Brussels During Springtime

March 28, 2021
2021-03-28
Brussels has always been a beautiful city. One with history and heritage that goes way back, but at the same time, is able to look straight into the future without any qualms. The charms of the past, the complexities of the present, and the hopes for the future are all here in plain sight, no matter what season it is. However, one can't deny that Brussels in spring is something else. There's a loveliness to it that you won't find at any other time of the year. But, to be more specific, here are some reasons why you would be in Brussels during springtime.
What's So Lovely About Brussels During Springtime

See Brussels in Full Bloom

At Grand Place, the central district of Brussels, you'll find one of the most beautiful flowerbeds in all of Belgium. Also known as the 'flower carpet,' many would argue it's the best in all of Europe or even in all of the world. Whichever you think it is, there's no denying that come springtime, this flower carpet looks more vibrant and lovelier than ever before. Perhaps it's because Brussels simply blooms during its time of the year. It's not just the flower carpet, all throughout the city, flower vendors overtake the many districts and help provide some botanical bliss in the Belgian capital!

Whether you hunted them down from the Easter Bunny or ordered yourself a fresh batch from the many chocolate shops in Brussels, Belgian chocolate is a must-have during Easter. Amidst this celebratory holiday, this sweet sensation will only have you feeling better than ever before. And isn't it occasions like this when you deserve to indulge in the best of the best?

Celebrating Europe Day Every Year

Speaking of spring holidays, one of the most important in Belgium, as well as the rest of Europe, is 'Europe Day.' Celebrated every first Sunday of May, it's to commemorate the peace and unity in Europe, especially since this continent has had the most wars in world history. Brussels, being a central city in the region as well as home to the European Union's headquarters, plays an instrumental role in the festivities. The entire city becomes one huge party, with people singing and dancing about, celebrating today's relatively peaceful times.

It's Festival Season in Belgium

'Europe Day' isn't the only festive part about spring in Brussels. Come springtime, the Belgian capital also hosts a flurry of festivals that people would love to partake in. And most of them are in May! There's the Iris Festival, held every May 8, the Brussels-Capital Region's fest day, which welcomes a string of free concerts happening throughout the city. You won't have to pay a single cent to take part in all of the fun! The Brussels Jazz Weekend, on the other hand, happens every last weekend of May which, true to its name, highlights the best of Jazz in the Belgian capital.

Loud And Proud During Brussels Pride

May, often the peak month of spring in Belgium is also when Brussels Pride takes place. A whole entire month devoted to celebrating the LGBTQ+ community in Belgium, the entire city lights up rainbow colors. Rainbow flags, balloons, banners, and even cakes reign supreme in the Belgian capital. Not to mention, of course, concerts, parties, talks, forums, and more all centered on the gay and queer communities in the country. It's quite literally the city's most colorful time of the year, one where being true and feeling pride about one's self, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, is all that matters!

Art Brussels - One Of Europe's Biggest Art Fairs

What's often forgotten about Brussels is that more than just the capital city of Belgium, it's also an art capital in the world. The art scene here is something else, one that can rival the likes of Paris, London, and more. And that's more than evident during Art Brussels, the city's annual art fair. It's also one of the biggest of its kind in Europe. Here, both big-name artists and up-and-coming creatives showcase their work for all the world to see. Some even use the city as a canvass, exemplifying their street art to really rile up the city during the fair.
