How To Dress Up Like A Spaniard For Winter

February 13, 2021

Spain is probably the last country you'll hear about when it comes to winter. The wintry cities in Russia, a snow-ladened New York, and, of course, the eternally cold Scandanavian countries are much more entwined with the season than this Mediterranean nation. But that doesn't mean there's no winter in Spain. The country still gets cold during this time. And if you're already there or you're looking to spend your winter vacation in Spain, you might want to dress up appropriately. Not to mention do it that you look like you belong here. These are some tips for dressing like a Spaniard during winter.

Ease Up On The Layers

Even though Spain does experience winter, it really snows here. Most especially when you go to or even move to Barcelona, San Sebastian, or any other of the country's warmest places. It does, however, still get cold. So when it comes to layering, you don't have to pile on as many clothes as you would in other countries. A light jacket or cardigan will do, especially over a long-sleeved sweater. If it's not enough, an autumn coat as the final layer will work fine as well. Don't overdo it else you'll feel hotter than you wanted to whilst out and about.

Knitwear is Enough

As already mentioned, you don't have to layer your outfit too much when you want to feel comfortable going outside in Spain during winter. Two or three layers will be enough. In fact, in some cases, even a chunky sweater will do too. Or multiple layers of thinly-knitted pieces. These types of clothing are the most comfortable as well as chic. They’d be trendy in Spain as they already are in cities like Paris, Rome, and more. Just imagine how cute and smaller you'll look when sporting an oversized sweater. Or how an elegant cashmere cardigan can complete a semi-formal look whilst keeping you warm at the same time. There's no end to how chic you can be with knitwear during winter!

Denim Does The Work

A harder material can also work during winter as well. Case in point: denim. Now, jeans are the eternal bottoms no matter the season. Whether it's spring, summer, autumn, or winter, a pair of jeans will never go out of style. Simple and basic, they're also affordable and easy to wear too! But during winter, when the air is colder than normal, you might want to add more denim to your look too. Maybe exchanging your jeans with a denim skirt, perhaps? Or a denim jacket for a chic monochromatic look? Get creative with your denim during winter!

All Black Everything

When all else fails, just go with black! If you thought this color only worked well in Paris, think again! The Spanish love a dark look just like the French do. In fact, during winter, the color practically becomes their uniform. This is thanks to a number of high street brands like Zara, Mango, and more. From coats and jackets to dresses and separates, tones of black always dominate these labels' winter collections. They even offer up different textures and textiles, ranging from wool and suede to leather and fur. It's a good thing black looks good on everyone!

Resist The Water

Even though snow is rare in Spain, what is common during winter is rain. While other countries may see April showers more often, here in Spain, it's winter showers that are more common. So to ensure you remain dry and chic all the way through, some water-resistant clothing will do the trick. Be it a jacket, a coat, or even an entire tracksuit, as long as the materials are 100% waterproof, you'll be fine. You won't feel any discomfort at all, you'll stay warm, and, last but not the least, you'll still look cool! Maybe even trendy too!

Go Sporty Too!

Why stop at water-resistant clothing? If you want, you can focus on sportswear when it comes to your winter wardrobe in Spain as well. Since streetwise sportswear has become the biggest trend in high fashion nowadays—from London to Barcelona and back!—there's no reason why you can't go out looking like you're an athlete when you wander around in Spain. Though you don't have to go full-on 'Sporty Spice' either. There are many ways you can incorporate sportswear in your daily outfit without it looking too much. For instance, a hoodie with a nice pair of denim jeans or even leather pants is a good idea.

Don't Forget The Hat

Don't forget the hat during winter, even if you're spending it in Spain! In fact, the season is a good excuse to wear a hat while going outside. Nowadays, more and more people are opting for the casual beanie look, a popular trend in cities like London, Milan, and others. Here in Spain, a beanie is more than appropriate especially since it's a light piece to wear in cold (but not freezing!) winter. Though if you want to go all out, you can always sport the wide-brimmed hats you'll see sold in various Spanish brands, ranging from Loewe to Stradivarius!
